Largest polished Marston Magna Marble Ammonite Fossil.

A very special fossil indeed, a genuine piece of Marston Ammonite marble. From the collection of J.W Kerkveld, sold off at auction some 4 years ago. I was lucky enough to be at that auction but as fate would have it, traffic was awful and I only got there in time to bid on the last fossil lot of the day. "1 box containing Ammonites" was the description. Unfortunately the entire collection had been split into over 40 separate groups of fossils but this was the only box containing Ammonites. The story of the Marston Magna marble is really something of a legend amongst fossil collectors world wide, mainly due to the fact that the exact location of the find has been lost to history... Legend has it that a large slab of this charcoal grey stone was found within the confines of the church graveyard when they were digging a well and that it was found at 74ft depth making it hard to find. Although not actually looking for stone (they were after the water) they soon found a use for it making decorative headstones for the graveyard and a few table tops.

None of the pieces were very large though and if you take a look around the British Museum of Natural History, you will see they have only one marker stone left. All the other headstones have been removed from the churchyard over the years by thieves, and as I have already said its down so deep anyhow that collecting is impossible so replacement of the stone is out of the question. We have tried to find out more about the man in question but have come up blank on that one. However, it was assumed by the auctioneers that this piece we are selling is actually part of a lager polished slab (probably being made as a table top) and this is an offcut from that process.

This piece measures 15" x 6" x 0.75", making it the largest polished piece of this quality in existence. It exhibits stunning detailing of dozens of Promicroceras marstonensis Ammonites. The fine polish (one both sides) reveals the beautifully intricate brown and golden Calcite replacement of the Ammonite chambers and suture lines, with original brilliant white shells still visible. As the images above show, this piece displays some of the finest Ammonite cross sections ever seen. The range of small Ammonites in such abundance supports the view that this fossil is a result of a mass mortality due to an Algal bloom in a breeding ground. A wonderfully tactile, stable and attractive display piece with natural Calcite lines (not to be confused with lines of repair!). Truly worthy of the worlds finest collections - one of the most prolific mass mortality Ammonite plates ever found.

A Caloceras Johnstoni irridescent Ammonite fossil from Somerset, UK. These thin-walled Ammonites are crushed, as are most of the Ammonites found in this locality. Flattening of the specimens has increased the area of iridescence of the shell, which is composed of alternating layers of Aragonite and Conchiolin or the minerals that have replaced them during fossilization. These not only transmit light but also diffract it, acting as a Rowland prism to divide light into its component parts while reinforcing certain wave lengths, much as the prisms do in satellites that study the chemical composition of the stars.

This is a particularly iridescent example, with the specimens collectively displaying the entire spectrum of sought after high colouring, including reds, yellows, greens and blues. The piece also features three natural Calcite lines. These are produced the propagation of water throughout the millions of years, and is not to be confused with lines of repair! This is a rare and highly desirable piece. This fossil has not been painted, its totally natural. They look somewhat like the Placentaceras Meeki in colour but at a much more realistic price. A single specimen is very rarely available, 4 large specimens of this quality on a single matrix is virtually unheard of!

The Ammonites measure 5", 4.25", 4" and 2.5" across respectively, in a good solid, original matrix of 17" x 13" x 1.5". Simply stunning to look at and an excellent display piece. Rarely will you find such a complete piece, and with such practical dimensions - of the few pieces of comparable Ammonite size and quality that have ever been found, the specimens are usually much less densely positioned, with enormous matrices as a result. Please note however this is still a very substantial piece, weighing over 8Kg. Any questions, or for further information or images, please do not hesitate to contact us at support@fossilfarm.co.uk. An Asteroceras sp. from the Jurassic coast of Dorset, England. This type of ammonite has coarse ribbing with a ridge running the length of the flattened keel. This 3-dimensional specimen exhibits great detail - the inner whorls are wonderfully defined. The fossil has terrific coloration which contrasts superbly with the grey matrix. The ammonite is beautifully presented on the original stone matrix measuring 7.5" x 5.3" x 2.1", which also gives home to several high quality Promicroceras Ammonites. This is an extremely displayable specimen of Asteroceras. Prepped here at the fossil farm to a very high standard.

At 4.6" long, this is a truly MONSTER sized specimen from the Cretaceous period, Tegana Formation, North Africa. This is certainly the largest we have had.

Superb overall condition, 100% genuine with serrations and beautiful colouring. Stable, un-painted , un-varnished, and un-buffed... just as it was found. After such high demand for these fantastic fossils, these teeth have now become extremely difficult to come by in as good quality as this.

Carcharodontosaurus (African T-Rex) was from 26-44 feet long (8-14 m), perhaps weighing up to 8 tons. It had a a skull that was as big as a person - 5'4" (1.6 m). It had large, powerful jaws with long, serrated, sharp teeth.

This North African carnosaur had a massive tail, a bulky body, and heavy bones. Its arms were short and had three-fingered hands with sharp claws.

Ursus spelaeus Cave Bear from the Ural Mountains of Siberia, Russia. These are very special fossils indeed and extremely rare, they look awsome on display and never fail to become the talking point of conversation.

The fossil is supplied disassembled in a strong wooden shipping crate. Reassembly is straightforward due to each bone being numbered consecutively from the ground up.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for more images or information. All in all, a stunning museum quality fossil with superb preservation. Rarely available, and even more rarely found of this quality and condition.

The approximate age of this piece is around 30,000 years old, dating from the Pleistocene Epoh.
