Marston Magna Marble Fossil Ammonites.

A very special fossil indeed, a genuine piece of Marston Ammonite marble. From the collection of J.W Kerkveld, sold off at auction some 4 years ago. I was lucky enough to be at that auction but as fate would have it, traffic was awful and I only got there in time to bid on the last fossil lot of the day. "1 box containing Ammonites" was the description. Unfortunately the entire collection had been split into over 40 separate groups of fossils but this was the only box containing Ammonites. The story of the Marston Magna marble is really something of a legend amongst fossil collectors world wide, mainly due to the fact that the exact location of the find has been lost to history... Legend has it that a large slab of this charcoal grey stone was found within the confines of the church graveyard when they were digging a well and that it was found at 74ft depth making it hard to find. Although not actually looking for stone (they were after the water) they soon found a use for it making decorative headstones for the graveyard and a few table tops. None of the pieces were very large though and if you take a look around the British Museum of Natural History, you will see they have only one marker stone left. All the other headstones have been removed from the churchyard over the years by thieves, and as I have already said its down so deep anyhow that collecting is impossible so replacement of the stone is out of the question. We have tried to find out more about the man in question but have come up blank on that one. However, it was assumed by the auctioneers that this piece we are selling is actually part of a lager polished slab (probably being made as a table top) and this is an offcut from that process.

This piece measures 6" x 4.8" x 1.5". It exhibits stunning detailing of dozens of Promicroceras marstonensis Ammonites positives and negatives and two Asteroceras smithii Ammonites. Polished on one side to show the intricate brown and golden Calcite replacement of the Ammonite chambers, and 3D prepared on the other side to show the original brilliant white shells. The range of small Ammonites in such abundance supports the view that this fossil is a result of a mass mortality due to an Algal bloom in a breeding ground. A wonderfully tactile, stable and attractive display piece, and truly worthy of the worlds finest collections.

Keichousaurus hui Fossil Reptile - Rare juvenile specimen

A very detailed fossil Keichousaurus hui from China. The complete piece measures 4.2" x 2.6" x 0.25". This specimen exhibits superb preservation throughout, with good relief of bones from matrix.

A very intricate example with superb skull preservation... Since China's ban on export of these fossils, it is becoming very difficult to obtain genuine examples such as this.

The Keichousaurus hui was a semi aquatic Reptile from China during the Triassic period. The genus derives its name from the 1957 location in Keichow Province where they were first discovered... The Keichousaurus is an iconic and very complete fossil that displays fabulously.

Ichthyosaur Skull Fossil

This exceptional and highly sought after fossil measures 8" x 5.5" x 2". Excellent preservation and clearly visible bone structure on all bones on this wonderful piece. A good displayable piece matrix, with stand included.

Excellent detailling and intricacy. From Lyme Regis on the famous Jurassic Coast of Dorset, UK. A famous piece from this world renowned location, not something that comes up very often!

The piece shows meshed teeth in situ, with intact sclerotic eye ring with a neck vertebra protruding to the right.

Ichthyosaurs were not dinosaurs, but represent a separate group of marine vertebrates. Because ichthyosaurs were so specialized and modified for life in the ocean, we don't really know which group of vertebrates were their closest relatives.

They might have been an offshoot of the diapsids — the great vertebrate group that includes the dinosaurs and birds, the pterosaurs, the lizards and snakes, and many other vertebrates. On the other hand, some have suggested that the ichthyosaurs were descended from a distant relative of the turtles.

The first ichthyosaurs appeared in the Triassic. In the Jurassic, ichthyosaurs reached their highest diversity, and then began to decline. The last ichthyosaurs disappeared in the Cretaceous — several million years before the last dinosaurs died out. Whatever caused the extinction of the dinosaurs did not cause the ichthyosaurs to die out.

Asteroceras sp. from the Jurassic coast of Dorset, England

An Asteroceras sp. from the Jurassic coast of Dorset, England. This type of ammonite has coarse ribbing with a ridge running the length of the flattened keel. This 3-dimensional specimen exhibits great detail - the inner whorls are wonderfully defined. The ammonite is beautifully presented on the matrix, which also gives home to a Promicroceras. This is an extremely displayable specimen of Asteroceras. Prepped here at The Fossil Farm, hand polished for a natural high gloss finish with no lacquers or varnish. The result is a wonderfully tactile and importantly, extremely stable display piece.

The Ammonite measures just over 6" across on an original, painstakingly sculpted Blue Lias (sea)flatstone measuring 17.5" x 17" x 4.5".

This is one of the nicest Asti's I have had in a while, a quick search on eBay will reveal just a couple for sale and to be honest they are very small and although nice not nearly as eye popping as this one is.

This is a huge single piece originally dug out by hand in the 1960's from Watchet, Somerset. It was in a private collection until about 18 months ago when we purchased it and cleaned it here in our workshop in Hastings. Until that time it was still mostly covered in its shale and the ammonites needed to be uncovered. There is over a months worth of prep work on this single piece. The matrix measures 4ft 8" by 2ft 6", and displays 25 Ammonites.

You will never see another one as large as this anywhere. All these amazing ammonites are as found, NONE have been stuck on or added, its an original piece. Because the site is SSSI and on the world heritage list fossil collecting from the area is prohibited. This means that if you want one of the nicest display pieces money can buy, nows your chance. I have no more of these and can't envisage ever getting another like this.

These thin-walled Ammonites are crushed, as are most of the Ammonites found in this locality. Flattening of the specimen has increased the area of iridescence of the shell, which is composed of alternating layers of aragonite and conchiolin or the minerals that have replaced them during fossilization. These not only transmit light but also diffract it, acting as a Rowland prism to divide light into its component parts while reinforcing certain wave lengths, in this case spectacular greens, reds and yellows (and even some turquoise), much as the prisms do in satellites that study the chemical composition of the stars.

If you are fortunate enough to live locally why not come and view the item in person. This is a very large and therefore heavy item. We will ship overseas and to this end can provide quotes if you email us.

If you take a look around the British Museum of Natural History, you will see they have only one small marker stone left.

All the other headstones have been removed from the churchyard over the years by thieves, and as I have already said its down so deep anyhow that collecting is impossible so replacement of the stone is out of the question.

This piece measures a huge 29" x 16" x 2.75", (approx. 2 and a half feet by 1 and a half feet) weighing over 20kg. The piece was bought by us as an uncut, part prepared slab, and has been fully prepared by us. There has been no repair to this piece whatsoever. It exhibits stunning detailing of thousands of Promicroceras marstonensis, Asteroceras smithii and Xiphoceras sp. Ammonties. Beautifully intricate black, brown and golden Calcite replacement of the Ammonite chambers and suture lines, with original white shells still visible. The golden Calcite veins have been exposed proud for additional aesthetic depth.

The range of small Ammonites in such abundance supports the view that this fossil is a result of a mass mortality due to an Algal bloom in a breeding ground. This is truly a one-off piece of exceptional quality and desirability. A stable, attractive and extremely significant piece - one of the most prolific mass mortality fossils ever to have been discovered in the UK. A 100% genuine example with not a single ammonite stuck on! Each and every Ammonite has been painstakingly prepared. Worthy of the worlds finest collections.

Ludwigia Ammonite multi block.

A stunning display piece measuring a huge 17.5" x 11.5" x 7". An Ammonite block of the finest quality with a very high level of preparation.

These beautiful little fossils are extremely rare. Not just because hunting in the Isle of Skye is treacherous, but also due to the extremely hard Jurassic stone, there is no more erosion and as such you simply cannot find any more...after they are gone, they are gone for good!

Scyphocrinus elegans Crinoid multi plate fossil from Morocco

Scyphocrinus elegans Crinoid multi plate fossil from Morocco

A very detailed Scyphocrinus elegans Crinoid multi plate fossil from Morocco (Silurian period), measuring a whopping 40" x 37.5" x 1.25" (just over 3 feet square). Very solid and stable. The specimens exhibit superb preservation throughout, and have excellent definition of fossil from matrix. Beautiful colouring, which is a nice change from the greyscales of many of the Chinese specimens.

A stunning display piece and one of the finest I have seen, with over a dozen highly detailed heads. Specimens of this quality have now become extremely difficult to obtain due to the exhaustion of the Djebel Issoumour beds.

Crinoids are part of a large group of marine invertebrate animals called echinoderms. Other echinoderms include starfish, brittle stars, sand dollars, sea urchins and sea cucumbers. Crinoids are unusual looking animals because they resemble plants more than animals. Crinoids are more commonly known as "Sea Lillies", a colloquial nomenclature which relates to their flower-like appearance. Please click on the detailed images for closer views.

A very unusual and significant fossil with just one line of repair to the matrix, from a single break due to excavation. The repair (visible only from the rear) shows that this is NOT an artificial assemblage from a number of pieces, as is unfortunately commonly found with large fossil assemblages from this region. This piece has NOT been backed with epoxy, which is usually used to conceal lines of repair.

A genuine and honest piece with beautiful natural colouring. Large and eminently displayable, this piece measures 31" x 20.5" x 2".

Ichthyosaur Bone Block Fossil

Ichthyosaur Bone Block Fossil

This exceptional and highly sought after fossil measures 11.5" x 8" x 3". Excellent preservation and clearly visible bone structure on all bones on this wonderful piece. A good displayable piece matrix, with stand included.

Excellent detailling and intricacy. From Watchet, Somerset, England. A famous piece from this world renowned location, not something that comes up very often! Meticulously prepared without chemicals, to the absolute highest standard.

Measures 21.25" x 15" x 0.7". This particular piece is not as densely packed as classic Marston Magna Marble, and shows more septarian Calcite in the form of golden intersecting lines (not to be confused with lines of repair!). Although not a highest grade piece, this huge plate is nevertheless extremely aesthetically pleasing, and exhibits stunning detailing of dozens of Promicroceras marstonensis and Asteroceras smithii Ammonites. The fine polish (on both sides) reveals the beautifully intricate brown and golden Calcite replacement of the Ammonite chambers and suture lines, with original brilliant white shells still visible.

The range of small Ammonites in such abundance supports the view that this fossil is a result of a mass mortality due to an Algal bloom in a breeding ground.

Spinosaurus Tooth Fossil

Spinosaurus Tooth Fossil.

A 3.1" long, this is a very large specimen of this sort. 100% genuine. A superb example with excellent enamel preservation and colouration. From reputedly the largest carniverous dinosaur. An extremely well preserved specimen.

One of the most interesting features of the spinosaurus was the sail on its back believed to have been used to attract a mate, in the same way as a peacock's tail, or to intimidate enemies or possibly to keep the animal cool. Spinosaurs, with their long and slender snouts, were like theropod dinosaurs with crocodile mouths. Their long teeth interlocked to catch prey, and there is evidence that they fed largely on fish.

An exceptionally rare fossil Lepidotes mantelli skull from the Wealden clay (Hastings beds) at Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. Dated recently to 138,000,000 years old (Lower Cretaceous). These fossils are not found very often at all. This one was featured in the local newspaper because of its size and preservation. The deposits in which these are found in have produced over the years a small number of good examples. However, the local Geology Society has remarked that this is the finest ever found. The skull measures 11" x 8". Both inner and outer eye plates, intact teeth and stunning preservation of the ganoid scales.

A wonderful piece, prepared here at The Fossil Farm. This piece was found as three pieces, and has been sympathetically restored, with no reconstruction of any parts. Always saught after by collectors of Mesozoic fish fossils. You are welcome to view at our shop in Hastings for a greater appreciation of the intricacy and sheer quality of this piece - the photos really don't do it justice.

A very detailed Scyphocrinus elegans Crinoid multi plate fossil from Morocco (Silurian period), measuring a whopping 40" x 26" x 2" (just over 3 feet by 2 feet). Very solid and stable. The specimens exhibit superb preservation throughout, and have excellent definition of fossil from matrix. Beautiful colouring, which is a nice change from the greyscales of many of the Chinese specimens.

A stunning display piece and one of the finest I have seen, with over half a dozen highly detailed heads.

Largest Marston Magna Marble Ammonite Fossil.

If you take a look around the British Museum of Natural History, you will see they have only one marker stone left.

All the other headstones have been removed from the churchyard over the years by thieves, and as I have already said its down so deep anyhow that collecting is impossible so replacement of the stone is out of the question.

THIS IS THE LARGEST PIECE IN EXISTENCE, measuring a huge 25.5" x 19.5" x 1.25". The piece was bought by us as an uncut, part prepared slab, and has been fully prepared by us, taking over 300 hours to complete. There has been no repair to this piece whatsoever. The slab has been cut and ground with a perfectly flat back, allowing for wall mounting.

Worthy of the worlds finest collections.

On offer here is something rather special. A very detailed and very large complete Crinoid fossil, Pentacrinites fossilis, from Lyme Regis, England, measuring a whopping 30" x 15" x 0.75". Very rarely found in as big a piece as this, with 5 complete heads. The beautiful gold Pyrite stalks provide a good contrast between crinoid and matrix.

100% genuine, and NOT a composite of fragments from different locations, just remounted as is necessary for all Pentacrinites fossils.

As always, you are welcome to come and view the fossil at our shop...the photos here do not fully convey the quality of this piece! Please note: The fossil will be securely attached to a solid board and well packaged for worldwide shipping.

Eurypterid "Sea Scorpion" Fossil

A large and exceptionally detailed Eurypterus fossil from the famous Lang's Quarry, New York, U.S.A. Approximately 400,000,000 years old. A fearsome predator of the Trilobites.

A beautiful specimen, extremely rare in this quality, with superb preservation of limbs, eyes, and unusual detailling along the centre of the Tergites (see below).

The "sea scorpion" measures a large 6.2" long by 4.5" wide, on a matrix measuring 8.9" x 6.9" x 1.2". Not to be confused with inferior specimens from other locations. This is the New York State fossil, specimens of which grace the finest museums and private collections the world over.

A fossil skull of Mosasaur, Platecarpus sp. dating from the late Cretaceous period, Morocco. This piece has been prepared to reveal a remarkable level of detail and preservation. The original matrix has been plaster backed for rigidity. The skull is complete, with several cervical vertebrae. Extremely aesthetically recognisable, with excellent bone and teeth exposure. Skulls of this quality are exceptionally rare. Due to their completeness, they can be removed from their matrix for 3-dimensional preparation.

This piece measures 55" x 25" x 5.5" (approximately four and a half feet, by two feet across). A skull of this size equates to an approximate Mosasaur total length of 15 feet. 100% genuine and authentic specimen with only original teeth and bone as discovered and no replacements. A stunning, rare and scientifically significant fossil. There has been NO reconstruction or augmentation to this piece whatsoever.

As you may be aware, the vast majority of Mosasaur fossils are composite reconstructions, often using modern bone for jaws and assorted teeth,
set in an entirely manufactured "matrix". Inspection of real examples like this one show the difference in bone structure and texture between the genuine, and their dusty mass-produced impostors!
The photos are of the actual item for sale, and are not generic catalogue shots! The skull will be securely packaged in a strong wooden crate for worldwide shipping.

Paradoxides Trilobite Fossil.

A rare and very large Cambrian period multi plate from Morocco. 8 high quality specimens on a single plate, with many other partials and imprints on a good solid matrix with superb displayable geometry, measuring a whopping 54" x 38" x 3" (Approx. 4 and a half feet by 3 feet).

A very significant piece, over 500,000,000 years old. Excellent fossil-matrix contrast makes for a truly knockout display piece. Superb preservation and definition of these stunning fossils.

This multi plate is an entirely natural mortality assemblage and prepared as found and is not to be confused with the majority of Paradoxides "multi plates". The matrix is a single piece with no repair whatsoever.

This piece measures 15" x 6" x 0.75", making it the largest polished piece of this quality in existence. It exhibits stunning detailing of dozens of Promicroceras marstonensis Ammonites. The fine polish (one both sides) reveals the beautifully intricate brown and golden Calcite replacement of the Ammonite chambers and suture lines, with original brilliant white shells still visible. As the images above show, this piece displays some of the finest Ammonite cross sections ever seen. The range of small Ammonites in such abundance supports the view that this fossil is a result of a mass mortality due to an Algal bloom in a breeding ground. A wonderfully tactile, stable and attractive display piece with natural Calcite lines (not to be confused with lines of repair!). Truly worthy of the worlds finest collections - one of the most prolific mass mortality Ammonite plates ever found.

A Caloceras Johnstoni irridescent Ammonite fossil from Somerset, UK. These thin-walled Ammonites are crushed, as are most of the Ammonites found in this locality. Flattening of the specimens has increased the area of iridescence of the shell, which is composed of alternating layers of Aragonite and Conchiolin or the minerals that have replaced them during fossilization. These not only transmit light but also diffract it, acting as a Rowland prism to divide light into its component parts while reinforcing certain wave lengths, much as the prisms do in satellites that study the chemical composition of the stars.

This is a particularly iridescent example, with the specimens collectively displaying the entire spectrum of sought after high colouring, including reds, yellows, greens and blues. The piece also features three natural Calcite lines. These are produced the propagation of water throughout the millions of years, and is not to be confused with lines of repair! This is a rare and highly desirable piece. This fossil has not been painted, its totally natural. They look somewhat like the Placentaceras Meeki in colour but at a much more realistic price. A single specimen is very rarely available, 4 large specimens of this quality on a single matrix is virtually unheard of!

The Ammonites measure 5", 4.25", 4" and 2.5" across respectively, in a good solid, original matrix of 17" x 13" x 1.5". Simply stunning to look at and an excellent display piece. Rarely will you find such a complete piece, and with such practical dimensions - of the few pieces of comparable Ammonite size and quality that have ever been found, the specimens are usually much less densely positioned, with enormous matrices as a result. Please note however this is still a very substantial piece, weighing over 8Kg. Any questions, or for further information or images, please do not hesitate to contact us at support@fossilfarm.co.uk. Please click on the detailed images for closer views.

An Asteroceras sp. from the Jurassic coast of Dorset, England. This type of ammonite has coarse ribbing with a ridge running the length of the flattened keel. This 3-dimensional specimen exhibits great detail - the inner whorls are wonderfully defined. The fossil has terrific coloration which contrasts superbly with the grey matrix. The ammonite is beautifully presented on the original stone matrix measuring 7.5" x 5.3" x 2.1", which also gives home to several high quality Promicroceras Ammonites. This is an extremely displayable specimen of Asteroceras. Prepped here at the fossil farm to a very high standard.
